Jamie got me thinking about this again after I read her recent post. There are rules we all live by...rules we were brought up with or taught along the way and rules we make for ourselves. I was born into a catholic home and I learnt about the 10 commandments at an early age. My family went to church often and I listened to what the priest had to say about loving thy neighbour and Jesus being our saviour but within my family I didn´t find the unconditional love that was preached about. I tried to be a church goer again after my children were born but I didn´t feel at home and after my marraige broke up, most sermons had me feeling like a loser.
About 2 years ago I found a book called "Message from Forever" by Marla Morgan. It´s a story about finding yourself and finding your roots. At the end of this book there are 10 "you should" commandments that the Australian Aborigines live by. I do my best to remember them and live by them and although I don´t always succeed I know that they are right for me. Here they are:
1. You are to express your own creativity
2. Recognize that you carry responsibility
3. Before your birth you consented to help others
4. You are to attain emotional maturity
5. You should be entertaining
6. You should be a good manager of your energy
7. You should enjoy music
8. You should strive for wisdom
9. You are to learn self discipline
10.You are to observe without judging
There are explanations for all of these and if you want to know more, I encourage you to read this book.

What a fascinating list. I'm finding it so intriguing. "You should be entertaining" was such a surprise and so interesting. What would the world be like if we tried to entertain each other or at least were conscious of not boring each other! And imagine that enjoying music is a commandment. Wow. You really got me thinking too!
I was so moved when I read your post. This is the way I try to live, but I've never seen these commandments (or commitments) written down in such a simple way. How wonderful the world would be if we could all strive follow these guidelines with respect and tolerance for others. I'm going to the library tomorrow and I will see if they can get this book in for me. Thank you...
What a fascinating idea! Will definitely have to read this book.
P.S. I'm still working on the ATC card for you. It's my first one so I'm struggling but I'm hoping to be finished of it soon!
Those are beautiful ... I'm intrigued by the way the responsibility is put on the individual. Can't wait to learn more!
Happy Weekend to you!
Hi Chest of Drawers,
I've seen you on lots of "favorite links" lists, and so this is my first visit. I came to you via Jamie's post on a credo.
Your miniature biography at the beginning of your post tells so much. What a large and necessary step it was for you to leave the Church. I grew up in an atheist household and now, at the age of 47, am searching for some reputable house of faith. Mainstream religion repells me.
These ten rules are so interesting and unexpected. Sometimes when I encounter a really different mindset, it's hard for me to see the coherence. I helps to know that they work for you. It makes me read them over again and try to measure my life to them.
Fantastic guidelines for life! I need to really work on, "You should observe without judging."
Now you strike me Claudia as one who is well on her way to living each of these beautiful truths. I read Morgan's other book, Message Mutant Down Under, about 8 years ago and loved it. Reading this post tonight makes me want to reread it again!
